Commemorate the ANZACs

23 April, 2007

Anyone that has been to the ANZAC commemorative site in Gallipoli, Turkey and looked out over the Dardanelles strait and surrounding land is sure to attest that the site is beautiful, sad, and eerie all at the same time. It's hard not to feel a sense of patriotism and sadness as you walk along the beach and cliffs, but it's a good feeling too to know that much of the World is now safer and more united than it was in the troubled times of the early 20th century.

ANZAC Day is observed in New Zealand on April 25th, the anniversary of the first day of conflict in Gallipoli during World War I. It is a commemoration for those who died in service for their country in World War I and other wars, and a day to honour our returned servicepeople. If you'd like to learn more about ANZAC Day and the events it commemorates, the RSA website contains a nice guide for New Zealanders, and provides links to information on dawn services and other commemorations in your area.

Contrary to what many people believe, the ANZACs did not win the battle at Gallipoli and the deathtoll was not New Zealand's largest. There is an interesting list of Myths & Misconceptions put out by the New Zealand Government that would be good for all New Zealanders to read.
